Welcoming Autumn, Shearing Angora Goats, and Mohair

Welcoming Autumn, Shearing Angora Goats, and Mohair

Dear friends,

Autumn is my favorite season. Crisp nights, golden leaves, pumpkins on the porch. Part of me wants to be like the grasshopper - riding my horse every day, hiking in the mountains, soaking in the sun and beauty.

But this is also the season to be the ant. Winter comes quickly, bringing cold and snow. The ant and the grasshopper must stay in balance.

September is when the shearing clippers hum here at the ranch. Our goats have spent summer grazing the pasture while growing soft and lustrous locks of mohair. Now it is time to shear and gather the harvest, a tradition as old as time.

Rachel is our shearer. With expert hands, she glides over each goat while I gather the fleece. After a quick health check, the goats rejoin their herd, ready to grow the next crop.

The finest mohair becomes Caprine socks and throws. The sturdier fibers are woven into rugs. The rest enriches my garden, returning to the earth. Nothing is wasted. That full circle of sustainability feels so good. Healthy for us and for the land.

Our story isn’t just about us - it includes you. From goats in the summer sun, to shearing in autumn, to socks and throws that carry you through winter, you are part of this cycle. You are part of the balance that makes Caprine work.
