Fall Shearing Season and Natural vs Synthetic Fibers

Fall Shearing Season and Natural vs Synthetic Fibers

Dear friends,

Shearing season is here at the ranch. The bucks are finished, and now we’re working through the does. I love fall shearing! After a summer on pasture, the mohair locks are at their best - soft, silky, and lustrous. The goats graze the grass, their mohair grows strong and healthy, and together we create something beautiful.

For thousands of years, people relied on natural fibers like wool and cotton for clothing and bedding. Add mohair, alpaca, or cashmere, and that softness rises to a whole new level. Still, nothing compares to the silkiness of mohair. It’s always a joy to feel each fleece as it’s shorn, knowing it carries both beauty and purpose.

The opposite of this? Synthetic fibers, especially polyester. Today, polyester dominates clothing and textiles - fleece jackets, plush blankets, bedding, activewear. But polyester is petroleum-based, sheds harmful microplastics, and even contains BPA. It’s anything but natural.

Our ancestors spun and wove with what the earth provided, always in rhythm with the seasons. My hope is that we continue choosing natural fibers: cotton, wool, and yes, mohair. They’re better for us, better for the land, and they carry a story that connects us to something real.

I love this land I call home. I love my angora goats. And I love sharing mohair with you - one of nature’s softest luxuries.
