County Fair Nostalgia as Summer Fades

County Fair Nostalgia as Summer Fades

Dear friends,

Fair week always brings a wave of nostalgia. Have you read Charlotte’s Web? I think of it every time I walk our little county fairgrounds, glancing at the barn rafters for a watchful spider. Of course, she’s never there—the 4-H kids keep the barns spotless.

When my kids were in 4-H, the fair shaped our summers. Months of practicing with horses, grooming rabbits, and caring for chickens built long, busy days filled with laughter, lessons, and the thrill of a blue ribbon in hand.

Now we wander the fairgrounds, reminiscing and taking it all in. Children dart about with carefree joy, the scent of popcorn fills the air, and laughter drifts from every corner. Every turn brings something familiar: animals, fresh produce, preserves, quilts, and flowers.

For me, the fair is the heartbeat of summer—a timeless gathering woven from tradition. And just as Charlotte’s Web reminds us that seasons change, the fair gently ushers in autumn: crisp mornings, golden light, and that first satisfying crunch underfoot.

As fair week fades, I lean into cozy days ahead. Sarah has captured some lovely new pictures out in the field and the website has a warm, inviting refresh. A pair of soft socks or a mohair throw can make these shortening days feel like a warm embrace—and it would bring me joy to know they’re keeping you company.
