Asking Questions About Fast Fashion with Holiday Sales

Dear friends,

It’s that time of year when sales and stuff take over. Fast fashion, fast home goods…fast everything.

My inbox is full of “buy now” emails. It always makes me think of a slower time, when the big Christmas catalogs arrived. Us kids took turns circling the pictures and writing our names by our favorite choices.

Holiday shopping meant strolling downtown to familiar faces and carols drifting from shop windows. The 1970s were a great time to be a kid!

Innovation keeps our lives moving forward and nothing stays the same, but sometimes the old ways return because they are the best ways.

I’m thrilled to see natural fibers making a comeback! The classic fashion houses never let them go, and it’s heartening to see the world coming back to what truly matters.

Because I make and sell mohair throws, I follow other blanket brands. Many of the big trending ones are plush or faux fur - super soft and entirely acrylic, aka plastic. They shed microplastics into our homes and waterways, and most people never realize the damage to themselves, their homes, and the earth.

Then there are wool, alpaca, and mohair blankets - slow-grown, responsibly raised, and made to last. Yes, they cost more. But cheap plastic has its own hidden price.

As the shopping rush ramps up, I hope we all pause to ask: Is this good for the earth? Will it last? Whom am I supporting? Where did it come from?

And from me, you won’t get pushy emails or endless promotions. That’s not our way. But I do hope you’ll remember the small, hardworking businesses doing their best with heart, not huge marketing budgets.

In a sea of mass-produced goods, every time someone chooses Caprine, it truly matters - to us and to the goats who make it all possible.
